Tell Congress to Support Seniors

It’s startling the terrible reality millions of seniors face every day. After a lifetime of contributing to our society, too many seniors are spending their golden years worrying about where to find their next meal.

Millions of older Americans live on fixed incomes that force them to make impossible choices about how to make ends meet—and often have to choose between medical care and nutritious food.

The federal nutrition programs are able to work alongside charitable organizations to help seniors facing hunger. Let your elected officials know that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is critical in the fight to solve senior hunger.

Please Protect Seniors Who Struggle with Hunger

Dear [Decision Maker],

May is Older Americans Month, and I'm writing to you today to ask you to support programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) that help provide food for seniors struggling with hunger.

After a lifetime of contributing to society, many seniors are living on fixed incomes that often force them to make impossible decisions between paying for healthcare or prescriptions and buying groceries. Many seniors rely on programs like SNAP and CSFP to supplement their dietary needs, however too many seniors are not able to access the program. Only 42 percent of seniors who are eligible for SNAP are currently enrolled in the program. We must do more to ensure seniors who have access to SNAP are able to age healthily in their homes and communities. I hope you can work with your colleagues to ensure the application for seniors applying to SNAP is simplified, and that seniors are able to utilize SNAP to help make ends meet.

In America, we believe in opportunity for all. Given the associated healthcare and economic costs of hunger and poor nutrition, an investment in senior nutrition programs today will improve our communities and our budget in the long run.

Food banks and other charities can't solve the problem of senior hunger alone, which is why your role as a federal legislator is so important. This Older Americans Month I am asking you to help raise awareness on the important issue of senior hunger and to strengthen SNAP so that all low-income seniors have the nutrition they need.
