Family smiling Family Story. Mary, San Antonio.

I have great kids. Not one of my three - ages 8, 11 and 14 - has missed a day of school since kindergarten. My oldest received such high test scores he’s currently on track to receive a full scholarship to Duke. On top of all that, they never complain; which says a lot, considering things haven’t been easy lately.

We haven’t always struggled. A few years back, my husband was the top salesman at a car dealership. We always had enough. Everything changed when he was diagnosed with cancer not once, but twice. He’s in remission now, but still too weak to work. I run a small catering business between taking care of him and our three kids, but it doesn’t bring in enough to get by.

The mobile pantry at my kid’s school is a huge help. It gives us fresh fruits and vegetables - today I received tomatoes and asparagus. You can make fresh produce go a long way, and it’s critical to my husband’s recovery and my children’s growth.

My kids have bright futures. Thanks to the mobile pantry and San Antonio Food Bank, they get the healthy food they need to do well in school and be successful. I never want them to struggle like we have.

Family smiling Family Story. Virginia and Roger, San Antonio.

My husband and I worked full time at the same job for 16 years. When we got laid off, we thought it was the end of the world little did we know that would be the least of our problems.

A month after losing our jobs, our oldest son Roger Jr. was diagnosed with stage five of chronic kidney disease. Everything changed. Hospital visits took over our lives. Between the two of us, we couldn’t find a job that would enable us to take care of Roger’s needs and the needs of his little brother. There was hardly any work to begin with. Our money ran out and we had nothing.

We never thought we would have to ask for help, but life doesn’t always go as planned. We applied for food stamps, and we are very grateful for the support. Roger received a kidney transplant a year ago, but unfortunately, complications keep him in the hospital regularly. His body may be rejecting the kidney, we’re not sure, there’s a lot to worry about. Thanks to food stamps however, one thing we don’t have to worry about is feeding our kids.

At first, I cried about losing our material possessions, our home, our cars, etc. But now, none of that matters. My family is what is important. We could be living in a box on the street, but as long as we’re together and healthy and fine, I’d be happy. Home is wherever we are together.

Theresa and family Real Stories. Theresa, Charleston.

Theresa is a recent transplant to Charleston. Her extended family lives in the area, and offered her a place to live. She was grateful for the support. Theresa has a lot on her hands these days. She is a single mom, and both of her young daughters have autism. Jocelynn is 10, and very outgoing and friendly. Her sister Gwendolyn, age 8, is a class clown. “She always has to have a joke or stick out her tongue or make faces at you,” Theresa says, laughing.

Her daughters’ special needs require frequent hospital visits, making it hard for Theresa to hold a full-time job. She’s currently working on opening a web business, which allows her the flexibility to work from home. For the present however, the family sometimes has trouble making ends meet, so Theresa relies on the assistance of the pantry held at her daughters’ school. The boxes full of green beans, rice, fruit, peanut butter and more, help her get by on a little less.

Theresa is grateful for the assistance. The food helps her kids stay healthy and happy. “Just because we’re struggling now doesn’t mean we’re always going to struggle, or that we have always struggled,” she continues. “But at times that we need the [help], it’s there.” Theresa is confident she’ll be on her feet again one day, working in a job she wants to be in and providing for her family on her own. When that day comes, she says, she won’t forget those who helped her get there.

Scott in a field Family Story. Scott, Missouri.

I love listening to audio books. That’s why I loved trucking so much. I could get paid to listen to audio books! Throughout my life I’ve had many different jobs. I’ve worked in a steel mill, joined the Air Force and even had my own machine shop. But for 21 years, I was a trucker.

A few years back I got into a bad accident; rolled my truck. It took a long time for me to recover, and I was left with permanent disabilities. As a result, I couldn’t find a job. Soon my unemployment ran out and I had nothing.

Probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do was use food stamps. I’ve always been self-reliant, and at first, being on food stamps made me feel like I had failed, but I didn’t fail, I worked hard my entire life and now I needed help.

Food stamps have made an incredible difference. By taking a weight off my shoulders, they’ve enabled me to look forward to the future. Right now, I have a handful of grandchildren who love me. That’s something to be excited about.
